Angelika I. Martin, PhD

Academic Specialist: Medical Student Education Coordinator, Office of Medical Student Education

Bio

Dr. Angelika Martin studied biochemistry and pharmaceutical chemistry at the Julius-Maximilians University of Wuerzburg, Germany where she received her PhD studying the effects of compounds and metabolites of a pine bark extract from Pinus maritima (Pycnogenol®) on pathophysiological aspects of the metabolic syndrome. Her passion for teaching sparked back then, tutoring and instructing medical students and pharmaceutical students in biochemical and pharmaceutical labs.

In 2009, Dr. Martin shifted gears, now focusing her research interest on in vitro and ex vivo investigations of the cellular and molecular processes in global ischemia leading to neurodegeneration as post-doctoral fellow at the Indiana University School of Medicine–Fort Wayne. Her passion for teaching continued, first as instructor in pharmacology, then as course director of ICM II in the legacy curriculum and now as course director of Transitions 1 and Endocrine and Reproductive Biology and course co-director of Foundations of Clinical Practice Year 1 and Year 2, a fourth year elective Doctor as Educator, as well as lecturer and small group instructor in several first year and second year courses.

In 2016, Dr. Martin started the IUSM-FW Standardized Patient Program modeled after the Fairbanks Simulation Center in Indianapolis and which she currently leads as director.  Furthermore, she oversees and organizes the IUSM-FW Interprofessional Education and Practice events hosted for medical students several times a year in cooperation with other IU Fort Wayne schools and the Fort Wayne Area Interprofessional Education and Practice Consortium.

Current research interest: examin the role of a flipped classroom in medical school curricula.

In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family, riding bike, skiing, swimming, cooking, baking, gardening, and traveling.
