Bio

Dr. Sweazey received his Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Wyoming where he studied central neural processing in the gustatory system.  He did a two year post-doctoral position at the University Michigan studying the neuroanatomy and neurophysiology of brainstem pathways underlying protective reflexes of the upper airway.  He was then was appointed as an Assistant Research Scientist at University of Michigan receiving an NIH First Independent Research Support and Transition Award and R01 funding to study upper reflex pathways.  Dr. Sweazey assumed the position Assistant Professor of Anatomy, Cell Biology and Physiology at IUSM-FW in 1994.  While at IUSM-FW he has been responsible for the Neuroscience and Behvior course, served as an intraoperative neurophysiologist for the DBS treatment of Parkinson’s disease and essential tremor, and conducted preclinical research on the Neuropace implantable device for the treatment of epilepsy. He was appointed Assistant Director of IUSM-FW in 2008 and currently serves as statewide course director for the Neuroscience and Behavior course, site director for the Renal and Respiratory course, co-director for the IUSM-FW Scholary Concentration in Health Integration and Healthy Aging, is a member of the Indiana University Fort Wayne Executive Committee and serves as co-director of the IUSM-FW Brain Bank
