Medical Student Facilities
IU School of Medicine- Fort Wayne is located on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, the fifth-largest university in the state of Indiana. This campus environment provides medical students with the facilities and resources to succeed—personally and professionally. In addition to 24-hour access to the main facility of IU School of Medicine-Fort Wayne, students have access to:
- Helmke Library
- Athletic facilities
- Courses at Purdue Fort Wayne, including graduate and undergraduate-level courses
- University Fitness Center
- Interprofessional educational activities including simulation labs
- Cultural events
IU School of Medicine students in Fort Wayne benefit from the Medical Education Center at this location, which includes modern classrooms, teaching laboratories, well-equipped individual faculty research laboratories and a medical library. Classrooms hold a maximum of 32 students.
Work and Study Space
Students study in different places—some in groups and some individually. A range of public study spaces are available, including the library, classrooms, study rooms on campus. Other places to study include the Helmke Library, located in the middle of Purdue Fort Wayne’s campus, areas within the Walb Student Union and various coffee shops located throughout Ft. Wayne.
The Fort Wayne campus has computers available for student use in the library (Room 110) and the three designated study areas in the facility, also known as the Medical Education Center (MEC) on campus. The center maintains a small library in room 110 that has various reference textbooks and computer workstations. Computers operate on the Purdue Fort Wayne’s network and can be used to print materials for class. Students may use printers for free. Wireless access is available on campus and ports are available at every workstation in the classrooms. Exams are taken on students’ personal laptops through Examsoft.
All medical students also have access to all online resources, such as MedLine and various online textbooks, through the Ruth Lilly Medical Library.
A quick walk through into Walb Student Union offers a coffee shop and many dining options in the newly renovated Stomping Grounds cafeteria. A medical student lounge is located on the main floor of the Medical Education Building. Three microwaves, two refrigerators, and Direct TV are available for student use. Many students pack their own lunch utilizing the facilities in the lounge. Campus food vendors are located in the basement of the Walb Student Union and the basement of Kettler Hall.
The Follett’s Bookstore in Walb Student Union carries all textbooks for medical students.
Housing and Other Personal Space
Students at the Fort Wayne campus each have their own large locker for personal belongings and a personal study space in the tiered, lecture-style classroom. Each student is also assigned a mailbox in the student lounge for campus mail, announcements, etc. An outgoing mailbox is located in the main office, and a campus post office is located in the Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne campus Printing Services Building. The closest USPS building is located on the corner of Stellhorn Rd. and Maplecrest Rd. Intra-campus mail service is also available.
University apartment-style student housing is available for medical students at the Fort Wayne campus as well as several apartment complexes in Fort Wayne are reasonably priced for students looking to live on their own. Popular Fort Wayne apartment complexes for medical students:
- Canterbury Green: This is the closest complex to campus. The Medical Education Building is located at the north end of campus within very close walking distance to the complex.
