Mental Health Services
Medical students in Evansville who are seeking Mental Health Services have several options. IU School of Medicine offers psychiatric and counseling services via telephone or in person by Samia Hasan, MD, Jessica Fultz, MSW, LCSW, and Suzanne Kunkle, PhD. Call 317-278-2381 to schedule an appointment.
Locally, students can visit the University of Southern Indiana (USI) Counseling Center for personal mental health counseling. This service is funded as part of student fees and is available at no additional charge to IU School of Medicine students. The USI Counseling Center also provides limited psychological testing but does not perform testing for issues related to conditions such as Attention Deficit Disorder or possible Learning Disability. The Psychologists with Luzio & Associates are available for such testing in a fee-for-service arrangement.
The Student Health Center and the Counseling Center can provide assistance with referral for psychiatric evaluation and treatment. The USI Counseling Center (ORR Center Room 1051, 812-464-1867) is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.
Impaired Medical Student Program
The Impaired Medical Student Program provides students with appropriate education experiences related to substance abuse problems. A treatment component of the program, administered by the Indiana State Medical Association’s Commission on Physician Assistance, permits a student to seek help confidentially. Referrals to the Commission can be self-generated or made by a concerned faculty, friends or family members. A report to the School is made only in the event that the student does not comply with the treatment plan. The program coordinator of the Physician Assistance Program is Candace Backer, ACSW. Call 317-261-2060 or 800-257-4762 for information.
Non-school, independent providers are also available for consultation and treatment. Fees for evaluation and treatment are generally covered by a student’s health insurance. Students are responsible for covering the cost of any portion of the fee that is not covered by their insurance. Services by these non-school community providers are not part of your student fees and not part of the Office Visit Plan.
