Trustees’ Teaching Award Spotlight: Krista Brucker, MD

Written by Nikki Livingston

Each year the Indiana University Board of Trustees recognizes faculty excellence in teaching through a program known as the Trustees’ Teaching Awards. One 2018 Trustees’ Teaching Award recipient, Krista Brucker, MD was nominated by Emergency Medicine Chief Resident Class of 2018 alumnus, Noelle Tune, MD. In her nomination, Tune said, “Krista is one of the Emergency Department’s greatest assets. She provides tremendous on shift education and is an outstanding role model in the ED. In addition, she consistently takes the time to provide thoughtful feedback in our evaluations and has a clear interest in helping us succeed in both the science and art of medicine.”

Brucker earned her medical degree at Harvard and completed residency training at Northwestern. Brucker is an assistant professor of emergency medicine who works clinically at Eskenazi Hospital, and was named one of Indianapolis Business Journals 2018 “Health Care Heroes.”

When speaking about her teaching philosophy to The LeadER, the Indiana University School of Medicine publication for Emergency Medicine, Brucker said, “I take it as my charge to create an environment where [learners] feel comfortable trying out new skills and testing their clinical judgment, yet knowing that way off to stage left I’m there to make sure nothing terrible happens.”

We need your help identifying IU School of Medicine’s best teachers. Tenured and tenure-track faculty and librarians engaged in teaching are eligible, as are full-time clinical faculty and full-time lecturers whose primary duties are teaching, including faculty in the IU School of Medicine who may be located at medical centers or be paid by institutions other than Indiana University (e.g., IU Health Physicians, Eskenazi Health, Purdue University, Veteran Affairs, Ball State University, etc.).
