Cartwright named 2021 Simulation Operations Specialist of the Year

The IU School of Medicine Department of Anesthesia is pleased to announce that our Associate Director of Simulation, Johhny F. Carwright, III has been selected as the Simulation Operations Specialist of the Year by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH).

Johnny started at IUSM in August of 2019 and has helped our department improve the anesthesia simulation learner experience so much that one resident commented, “Johnny brings an infectious enthusiasm to our simulation education that was not there previously. Not only does this enhance the educational experience we have, but he brings more excitement to the whole endeavor. He is so obviously passionate that it makes you want to try harder and do more.” Another said, “I really appreciate the insane amount of work that he puts into making each and every sim lab feel more realistic… linking the manikin to the anesthesia machine is truly impressive. Our program is incredibly lucky to have someone as dedicated to their job as him!”

Johnny is one of only thirty Advanced Certified Simulation Operations Specialists in the world; he was inaugurated into the first class of CHSOS-A certified individuals in 2021. He considers working in the medical simulation world as the “holy grail” of careers because of its contribution to the continuum of education as well as the mission of improving healthcare quality and patient safety. Johnny is a multi-talented individual who is recognized for his outgoing, upbeat, and professional personality that he uses to quickly develop and maintain strong interprofessional relationships. He is gifted at navigating hospital departments and personnel needed to build healthcare simulation programs.

He is consistently recognized for being innovative and focused on exceeding faculty and co-worker needs and expectations. Congratulations Johnny!
