In addition to the core rotation requirements for the class of 2021, (Sub-Internship, Emergency Medicine, Radiology, and Transitions 3), students must also complete either one Critical Care Selective or Advanced Clinical Elective rotation during Phase 3.

To compliment the Critical Care Selective(s) and/or Advanced Clinical Elective(s) you choose, you are also required to complete an online Critical Care course that will broadly cover competencies you will need during this rotation. The online course will be available in Canvas starting April, 2020, and should be completed by the end of your rotation, although you are welcome to access it earlier.

Six additional elective rotations are required to fulfill IUSM graduation requirements. The categories and mix of the electives are listed below and can be discussed with your lead advisor to tailor your own plans according to your academic goals. The following requirements are not mutually exclusive – one elective can fulfill more than one requirement (e.g. an elective can be an away elective and a clinical rotation.)

Of the six additional elective rotations:

  • At least three electives must be established courses listed in the IU School of Medicine Course Catalog.
  • Three of the electives may be away or special electives.
  • Three of the electives must be clinical rotations (Clinical Practice or Advanced Clinical categories).
  • Students should select a variety of electives, and clinical electives should not all be based within the same department. It is highly recommended that at least one of the electives be selected from the Professional Development or Advanced Science categories.

Students in the class of 2021 will be able to rank preferences for their Critical Care Selective and/or Advanced Clinical Elective from Jan. 9-13, 2020. You will rank a minimum of 10 options for your selective rotation, with no maximum limit.

Please check your email the first week of Jan., 2020, for detailed information on this process from the Registrar.

Detailed timelines for Phase 3 planning are available on your Road to Phase 3 Checklist through your Advising RoadMAP on Canvas.
