May is Mental Health Awareness Month

Three people talking with clouds in background

Did you know that over the course of their medical training, 36% of the medical students and 21% of the residents and fellows who graduated in 2020 sought services from the IU School of Medicine Department of Mental Health Services (DMHS)? In fact, on average, DMHS sees approximately 300 trainees for counseling and medication management every month.

“We recognize that our medical trainees have had a lot to cope with in recent weeks and months,” said Samia Hasan, MD, assistant professor of clinical psychiatry and director of mental health services at IU School of Medicine. “We would also like to express our continued empathy and support for all of those who have been experiencing violence and marginalization and encourage you to reach out if we can be a support for you during this time.”

DMHS can help learners with a variety of mental health concerns, including personal issues, relationship stressors, challenges with focus and organization, anxiety, depression, test anxiety, and stress management. For added convenience, the department recently announced that counseling services are now available in Spanish.

Want to learn more about DMHS? Call 317-278-2383 or send a secure message through the DMHS portal using your IU credentials. If you’re in crisis, call the DMHS crisis line, 24/7, at 317-278-HELP (4357).
