The Department of Mental Health Services (DMHS) is excited to announce the launch of our newly revamped website. Redesigned to improve user experience and make relevant information more accessible, the new layout delivers quick links to learner resources, like our new Learner Portal, campus specific mental health resources and crisis contacts. Additionally, the website now includes helpful reference materials such as presentations, mental health screenings and information regarding common mental health concerns. Check out the new site now.

We know that we are not the only ones going through major changes these days, summer at IU School of Medicine brings transitions into new roles for learners, too. Whether you’re going from your first year of medical school to your second, getting ready to start your final year of medical school, starting a new role as a resident, or transitioning between years in a fellowship, this time of year brings a lot of change! Transitions can be exciting and invigorating, but they can also lead to feelings of anxiety. If you are noticing that you feel anxious, try one or more of the following strategies:

  • Use relaxation strategies like doing a few cycles of square breathing (breathe in for a count of 4, hold it for 4, breathe out for 4 and rest for 4) or try following along with a guided meditation (you can find lots of these on YouTube or download an app).
  • Keep your body strong and healthy by prioritizing exercise, fresh air, healthy foods and sleep. Even though it may seem like there is not time to fit it all in, taking even a five minute walk can make you feel dramatically more relaxed!
  • Try to reframe your thoughts. Rather than focus on everything you do not know, identify the things you do know about your new role. Focus on how much more you know than you did even a year ago. If you start to feel underprepared, remember that nobody expects you to know everything, that’s why you are still learning!
  • Check out the online resources on the new DMHS website for handling anxiety!

A little bit of anxiety as you start a new role is a completely appropriate reaction to a new situation. Experiencing butterflies in your stomach or struggling to fall sleep for a night can be pretty typical reactions to transition, but if your anxiety feels significantly bigger than that or is concerning you, it’s always a good idea to reach out for more support. You can schedule an appointment with DMHS using our portal, or if your needs are more urgent, call the 24-hour crisis line: 317-278-HELP (4357).
