Indiana University School of Medicine’s Medical Student Education (MSE) is pleased to announce a new partnership with the American Medical Association (AMA): the AMA UME Curricular Enhancement Program.
This innovative program, now a required part of the School’s curriculum, aligns with our Health Equity, Advocacy, and Leadership (HEAL) competency and offers benefits—curricular and non-curricular—to help you stand out as health care leaders.
If you’re a student in Phase 1 Year 2, Phase 2, or Phase 3, you’ll receive an introductory email from the AMA on August 12 with additional details and login instructions. Course directors and MSE curricular teams will communicate phase- or course-specific requirements and expectations.
The AMA UME Curricular Enhancement Program includes the following series:
- Health Systems Science
- Medical Student Leadership
- Health Equity and Structural Determinants of Health
- EHR Workflow
- Navigating Practice
You’ll receive an AMA certificate for completion of each series (e.g., HSS, EHR)—a great way to stand out in residency applications and interviews.
Along with these core curriculum improvements, your AMA membership (provided as part of the program) opens opportunities for you to engage as leaders at the local and national levels. More details about the following member benefits will be forthcoming:
- More than 1,000 national, regional, and local leadership positions
- Leadership education modules to help you develop as a leader
- Search over 12,000 programs on FREIDA, the AMA Residency and Fellowship Database, with access to save, rank, take notes, download/compare programs, and plan for application and Match fees with FREIDA's Residency Calculator
- Advocacy training and opportunities to meet with legislators on Capitol Hill
- Research Symposium to showcase your research with a $10,000 prize
- Poster Showcase to present your work on various topics, including leadership, health equity, advocacy/policy, and more.
We hope this partnership—which was made possible through a $19-million Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grant secured by Paul Wallach, MD, Bradley Allen, MD, PhD, and Paul Ko, MD—will support you as we strive toward our vision of preparing the next generation of health care leaders.
