Northwest Campus MS 1 & 2

IUSM-Northwest is located on the campus of Indiana University Northwest in the city of Gary, approximately 25 miles from Chicago.

The first and second year structure (see below) is designed around a hybrid Problem Based Learning (PBL) curriculum that focuses on problem-solving and active-learning. In this PBL curriculum, our students master the basic medical sciences one course at a time using patient cases as stepping stones to integrate essential concepts. The hybrid model is characterized by:

1. Problem-based tutorial sessions where small groups of students discuss and analyze medical cases in the presence of a faculty tutor and set appropriate learning objectives for self-directed study. Modest numbers of lectures and laboratory sessions supplement the tutorial sessions and assist students in the acquisition of essential basic science and clinical knowledge needed to satisfy the learning objectives
2. Integration of traditional first- and second-year content into seven curriculum units, or Steps, taught sequentially in a block-wise fashion during the first two years
3. Frequent interactions with patients throughout the first and second years, including interprofessional collaborations on patient care with health care students in Nursing and Social Work

The Northwest campus also offers the History and Physical Learning Center, a resource that uses standardized patients to create realistic patient simulations. Students can elect to stay on the Northwest campus to pursue their third and fourth year required clerkships.
