MS 1 & 2

First and Second Year Curriculum

First and second year courses are taught on each of the nine IUSM campuses, with course sequence, structure, and instructional method tailored to best suit each site.

Statewide educational equivalency is ensured through adherence to the 80% Core Curriculum, a comprehensive set of discipline-specific learning objectives. Detailed information about the 80% Core Curriculum can be found below.

At the end of the second year, students will have achieved Level 1 proficiency in all nine IUSM Competencies.

Campus-specific curricular information is available through the following links:

80% Core Curriculum

In an effort to allow medical students around the state access to the discipline-specific learning objectives and to facilitate assessment of Competency III, Using Science to Guide Diagnosis, Management, Therapeutics, and Prevention, MECA has requested a copy of the “80% core” curriculum from IUSM course directors statewide.

The “80% core” is the core information each discipline has agreed to present to all students across the state. It is expected that course directors will devote at least 80% of their course time to this core material. The remaining 20% of the course time is devoted to topics chosen at the discretion of individual course directors.

By presenting a document with each discipline’s learning objectives, students will be able to better prepare for statewide exams and STEP 1 board exams. IUSM will also be able to demonstrate the consistency of medical education across the state to the Liaison Committee for Medical Education (LCME).

Below is the listing of the core medical curriculum for medical students.
