Supporting IUSM-SB

Philanthropy at IU School of Medicine-South Bend

The Indiana University School of Medicine-South Bend owes its success to the generosity of a community that has been determined, from the inception of the IUSM regional medical program, to build a program that complements the excellence of the health care and higher education communities, and that helps assure this regional will enjoy quality physician care.

Two major gifts--from Ernestine Raclin and from Charles "Mike" Harper--allowed the region to realize the dream of a freestanding medical school and cancer research institute. Raclin-Carmichael and Harper Halls are named in their honor.

Moreover, through the annual Medicine Ball, the physicians and health care administrators and representatives of the local business community have raised more than $1.5 million in scholarship money to support student tuition and expenses.

These gifts are complemented by annual donations from alumns of the South Bend campus who have gone on to build medical practices in this area and throughout the country.

Our needs continue to grow, and your help is welcome and essential:

Supporting Scholarships: Students now undertake some $200,000 of debt during their four years of medical school. Scholarship support is an ongoing priority.

Third and Fourth Year Expansion: Since initiating the third and fourth year expansion program in 2008, IUSM-SB has set its sites on providing a program that meets or exceeds the IUSM system and that is dilligent in introducing students to the varied and excellent community medicine environment provided in our surrounding counties.IUSM-SB raises funds to underwrite the creation of fully realized four-year medical school faculty and facilities.

Cancer Research: With the opening of Harper Cancer Research Institute (HCRI) in Harper Hall in March, 2011, IUSM-SB and University of Notre Dame faculty are engaging in collaborations designed to abbreviate the path from the research bench to the patient's bedside. IUSM-SB raises cancer research dollars to seed those collaborations and help focus the investigative enterprise.
