Indiana University School of Medicine - South Bend's program is a complete four-year medical education training site. In a small class atmosphere of only 24 students in both the first and second years, students experience the ambiance of a nationally recognized university and the availability of one of the largest concentrations of practicing physicians in the state of Indiana. Upon entering the clinical training phase in years three and four, students are offered one-one-one instruction with physicians in outpatient clinics, OR, inpatient and emergent care settings.
For more information on each year please visit the MD Curriculum section of our website.
Highlights of our campus are:
First Year
- Block scheduling with courses designed in weeks of time and not semester-based
- Flexibility in schedule to accommodate self-directed learning or other non-academic activities
- Many classes end by noon with afternoon class time limited (except for courses with laboratory experience like Gross Anatomy, Histology and Neuroscience)
- Team-based learning exercises enhance the classroom learning in which students are paired into teams of 6 students to study clinical problems and applications
- Simulated patient training with nursing staff and feedback sessions with physician preceptors
Second Year
- Early patient exposure with teams of students assigned to a physician preceptor
- Second year medical students are paired with first year student to serve as local mentor and resource
