3rd and 4th Year Expansion

mark-thompson.jpg“We teach Real-World Medicine,” says Dr. Mark Thompson, a general surgeon who is on the front lines of educating third- and fourth-year students at the Indiana University School of Medicine-South Bend.

Initiated in 2008, IUSM-SB’s third- and fourth-year clinical training program is experiencing rapid growth and students from across the IUSM system learn about the one-on-one mentoring and hands-on opportunity that local physicians-instructors provide.

Students laud the high accessibility to patient care, and they see the full spectrum of problems that a strong community can provide.

Why do so many physicians take the time to teach? “First of all, it’s a heck of a lot of fun,” says Dr. David Van Ryn, clerkship director for emergency medicine and medical director of Elkhart General Hospital’s emergency department.van_ryn_release.jpg

Interacting with students is a learning experience for the teachers as well, says Paula Toth Russell, clerkship director of neurology. “They keep me on my toes.”
