The Laboratory Animal Resource Center in the School of Medicine at Indiana University in Indianapolis offers a summer fellowship opportunity for veterinary students. The position will be available from Mid-May until September and will be full-time paid position ($11/hr; 40hr/week). The length of the externship can be tailored to the individual. The responsibilities of the student will include assisting the veterinarians, facility manager and supervisors, and the veterinary technicians in the various daily activities in the animal facilities. The student will rotate through various sections of the LARC including the small animal operational units, the large animal operational unit, and the diagnostic laboratory and technical services centers. The student is expected to participate in the daily activities of the department and may have an opportunity to become involved in specific research projects, depending on his/her interest. Time will be also allotted for working directly with a research mentor which is designed to provide the student the opportunity to participate in a research project. In addition, the student will be required to present a seminar at the end of the fellowship on a topic of their choice, approved by a staff veterinarian. The fellowship is an excellent opportunity for 1st or 2nd year veterinary students who have an interest in or desire to gain additional experience in laboratory animal medicine and/or biomedical research. Activities described for the summer fellowship can also be scaled to be appropriate for a 2-4 week internship rotation that can be performed at any time during the year.
