Merrill Grayson Senior Chair in Ophthalmology

The Merrill Grayson Chair in Ophthalmology was established several years ago. We are now seeking to elevate this endowed fund to a senior chair, an honor befitting Dr. Grayson's many contributions to the IU Department of Ophthalmology and eye care throughout the nation.

A senior chair will also have a tangible impact. Senior chairs generate significant income each year, allowing the holder and the Department to aggressively pursue innovative research and education relating to eye care. These additional resources are critically important as we strive to build the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Eye Institute into one of the top eye institutes in the country.

Through the generosity of an anonymous donor, gifts and pledges to the Merrill Grayson Senior Chair made by June 30, 2010, will be matched with 50 cents for every dollar committed.  Your gift(s) received during this time will have an enormous impact and help us reach our goal of raising $1.5 million.

Merrill Grayson, M.D., received his Doctorate of Medicine from New York Medical College in 1941 and completed his residencies in both otolaryngology and ophthalmology at New York University and Bellevue Hospital.  He went into private practice in ophthalmology and in 1957 joined the faculty of Indiana University School of Medicine as assistant professor of ophthalmology.

Dr. Grayson's contributions to the profession are many. He pioneered the process of corneal transplantation by emphasizing the need for obtaining donor tissue and introduced the method of cryopreservation of corneal tissue. He has authored countless articles and written three textbooks, including Diseases of the Cornea, and he has been recognized as a foremost authority in the study and understanding of corneal function.

Likewise, Dr. Grayson has made remarkable contributions to the IU School of Medicine. He served the Department of Ophthalmology as Chairman on several occasions, wrote a department history and continues to serve as an advisor to the Department.

Dr. Grayson continues to be generous with his time and talent. He formerly served on the boards of the J.O. Ritchey Society and the Dean's Council, established the Grayson Leadership Award and the Grayson Ophthalmology Fellowship and has supported the Merrill Grayson Chair in Ophthalmology.
