Class of 1964

The Class of 1964 will be celebrating their 45th reunion this year. Our Class continues to give back to the Indiana University School of Medicine in a special way by honoring classmate Mary Jean Yoder, who was tragically killed in an automobile accident just after graduation. Each year, she is remembered by both the Mary Jean Yoder Memorial Award and Mary Jean Yoder Endowed Scholarship.

After Dave Chizek made the first contribution, the Class decided to establish an award in honor of our demure classmate who, although she always substituted the word "cross" for angry, was a person of great conviction when it came to serving the needs and rights of her patients.  The award - which was at first merely a plaque - was to be given to a senior who best represented Mary Jean's values: high academic achievement, moral character, and dedication to the service of others. This award continues to be given out yearly at the Senior Banquet by the Dean. To date $107,000 has been given to 29 students.

At our 25th reunion, the Class established an endowed scholarship in Mary Jean's honor.  It was first bestowed in 1996 and has been awarded to 19 students. Since 1998, the School has given the Mary Jean Yoder Endowed Scholarship to an incoming student for four years throughout the student's medical education. More than $201,400 has been raised from the scholarship and it will continue to grow into perpetuity.

The Class of 1964 has continued the goal of promoting excellence in medical education by supporting both the Mary Jean Yoder Memorial Award and Mary Jean Yoder Endowed Scholarship. It is our hope that the class will continue to support the School of Medicine in this special way. Your philanthropic support has contributed to countless lives. It will continue to make a difference in the present and future of medical education and patient care in Indiana and around the world.
