Cochlear Implant Program

Welcome!
The Indiana University Cochlear Implant Program welcomes you to learn more about cochlear implantation and the services offered by our program. We are a team of expertly trained professionals who are partners in providing compassionate service and exceptional care for both children and adults with hearing loss. Our program is located in James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children on the Indiana University Medical Center campus. Clinical services are provided through Clarian Health Partners Inc., the leading hospital system in the state of Indiana and one of the busiest and most highly regarded in the nation.

Our History
The Indiana University Cochlear Implant Program has a long-standing history of excellence dating back to 1979 when Dr. Richard T. Miyamoto implanted his first single channel cochlear implant device. At that time, cochlear implants were on the forefront of medical technology and the long term effects of cochlear implantation were not known. With Dr. Miyamoto’s guidance, the Indiana University Cochlear Implant Program was established and continued to grow as the positive benefits of implantation became increasingly evident. As the clinical team began seeing these benefits, Dr. Miyamoto’s commitment to documenting the advantages of cochlear implantation was realized with the development of The DeVault Otologic Research Laboratory. During this time of exciting discovery, Dr. Miyamoto served as a spokesperson to the FDA for clinical trials to establish the efficacy for use of cochlear implants as an option for individuals with severe-to-profound hearing loss. Throughout the years, cochlear implant technology has continued to improve. The Indiana University Cochlear Implant Program remains a leader in this field of ever changing technology. With over 1500 patients followed by our program, the experience and expertise provided by our implant team is invaluable. The surgeons, audiologists, and speech language pathologists that comprise our team continue to provide the highest quality, state of the art care to all individuals with cochlear implants. It is for this reason that our program is internationally recognized both as a clinical center and research resource for adults and children with severe to profound hearing loss.
