Advisor's Handbook

The online Advisor's Academic Handbook is for undergraduate program in the IU School of Medicine known as the "Health Professions Programs." Additional links to resources on programs in the IU School of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences and IU School of Informatics are at the bottom of the page.

This information is a supplement to each program's section in the 2008-2010 IUPUI Bulletin and should be used only in tandem with the official publication. Important changes within an individual program's requirements are noted below.

CLINICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE, B.S.

Clinical Laboratory Scientists (a.k.a. Med Techs) perform diverse and complex laboratory analyses on biological samples from patients. They combine theoretical knowledge and technical skills to provide quality test results that are used for making diagnostic and therapeutic decisions.

Updated 03/05/09. No change in requirements from previous year.Class capacity set at 12 students, but can vary slightly in a given year.

FULL ADVISOR'S HANDBOOK - CLINICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE

Estimated Cost Sheet is now updated to include information about the 2009-2010 academic year.

CYTOTECHNOLOGY, B.S.

Cytotechnologists inspect and evaluate cells or groups of cells to detect cellular changes indicative of cancer and other diseases. The prime objective is to detect cancer early, when the best chance for a complete cure exists.

Updated 03/05/09. No change in requirements from previous year.

Estimated Cost Sheet is now updated to include information about the 2009-2010 academic year.

HISTOTECHNOLOGY, Certificate & A.S.

The histology technician processes surgical, autopsy, or research tissue specimens for microscopic examination. Although most histology technicians work in human health care facilities, many are employed in veterinary, industrial, or research laboratories. The Certificate Program requires training access in a qualifying histology laboratory. The Assoiate Degree Program requires completion of the Certificate Program or national certification.

Updated 03/05/09. No change in requirements from previous year.

Estimated Cost Sheet is now updated to include information about the 2009-2010 academic year.

MEDICAL IMAGING TECHNOLOGY, B.S.
Medical Imaging Technologists are radiographers who have completed additional education in advanced image producation. They use interventional angiography, computed tomography, magnetic ressonance imaging, and/or ultrasonography as the imaging modality.

Updated 03/05/09.  Students entering in 2010 must now take a statistics course.  See advising grid for accepted courses. Introduction to computers has been dropped as a requirement.

IMPORTANT - Ultrasound track extended from 12 months to 18 months; effective with Summer 2009 entering class.  Program faculty have identified need for more clinical course hours prior to graduation and certification to the ARRT of competency in this area. All other tracks (e.g., MRI/CT) remain the same.

FULL ADVISOR'S HANDBOOK - MEDICAL IMAGING TECHNOLOGY

ADVISING NOTE: While students are not required to complete the laboratory component in chemistry for the MIT Program, it is advisable for students to consider completing this component since it is required for programs such as Nuclear Medicine Technology and Respiratory Therapy which may become back-up plans for students attempting to enter the Radiography/Medical Imaging Technology Programs.

Estimated Cost Sheet (MRI/CT and Intervention Radiography) is now updated to include information about the 2009-2010 academic year. NOTE:  This year a second estimated cost sheet exists for students who are completing the Ultrasound track.  This program requires 12.0 additional credit hours (all clinical hours) in the second year (summer & fall).

NUCLEAR MEDICINE TECHNOLOGY, B.S.

Nuclear Medicine Technologists provide patient diagnostic and therapeutic services using the nuclear properties of radioactive materials. They administer radioactive materials to parients to perform patient organ imaging procedures and analysis of biological specimens.

Updated 03/05/09. Students entering in summer 2010 will be required to complete a statistics course. See advising grid for accepted courses. The program will no longer require an introduction to computers course prior to entry.

Estimated Cost Sheet is now updated to include information about the 2009-2010 academic year.

PARAMEDIC SCIENCE, A.S.

Paramedics provide emergency patient care in the pre-hospital setting. They determine the nature and extent of victim's emergencies, immobalize fractures, supply intravenous therapy, and provide other life-saving interventions for the victims of acute illnes or injury. The Paramedic Science Program accepts applicants for both the fall and spring semesters.

Updated 03/05/09. No changes in requirements from previous year.

RADIATION THERAPY, B.S.

Radiation Therapists administer differing forms of ionizing radiation to specific sites of a patient's body to treat benign and malignant turmors. They operate various types of equipment and observe the clinical progress of patients to identify and minimize complications.

Updated 07/23/09. Students entering in 2010 will need to complete a statistics course. See advising grid for accepted courses.  Please note that statistics will be included in the math-science prerequisite course GPA calculated by the program's admissions committee.

Estimated Cost Sheet is now updated to include information about the 2009-2010 academic year.

RADIOGRAPHY, A.S.

Radiographers use x-rays to produce photographic images of body structure. These images are then used to diagnose and treat diseases and injureies incurred by patients. Ragiographers may also assist physicians in performing other complex examination procedures.

Updated 03/04/09. Required math course has increased to College level mathematics (up from intermediate algebra). Students entering in 2010 will need to complete this higher level math course prior to entry.

FULL ADVISOR'S HANDBOOK - RADIOGRAPHY

ADVISING NOTE: In addition to a student's cumulative and math/science grade point average, the pre-interview questionnaire, and the formal interview, the Radiography Program's Admissions Committee does give BONUS ranking points for students in the following areas: re-application, direct patient-care experience, and completion of general-education requirements.

Estimated Cost Sheet is now updated to include information about the 2009-2010 academic year.

RESPIRATORY THERAPY, B.S.

Respiratory Therapists evaluate and treat patients with cardiopulmonary disorders, and are actively involved in health promotion and disease prevention. They care for all types of patients, from the premature infant to the extremely old, and practice in a variety of settings, ranging from patients' homes to the highest level of critical care units.

Updated 03/04/09. No changes in requirements from previous year.
