Graduate Programs

Greetings to Prospective Students

We invite students who are interested in preparing for exciting careers in biomedical research to join one of our graduate programs.  The Department of Cellular & Integrative Physiology has an extraordinary group of dedicated and creative research scientists whose studies embrace both basic cellular and physiological processes, and include ground breaking research focusing on a variety of disease processes including cancer, diabetes, bone remodeling, cardiovascular, renal, membrane, and respiratory pathophysiology. Graduates from our program have enjoyed establishing careers in academic and private research institutes, industry, and government laboratories.

Although many prospective students are unsure as to what defines the field of Physiology, we invite you to examine our website where you will see examples of modern research that represent this exciting field of science. In addition, you may wish to check other informational resources such as the American Physiological Society (APS), American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB), North American Vascular Biololgy Organization (NAVBO), American Cancer Society (ACS), American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR), American Diabetes Association (ADA), or American Lung Association (ALA). These research resources represent fields of interest related to our departmental faculty and together with our departmental website will provide you with an understanding of our research interests. Our entire faculty strives to integrate many basic cellular, molecular sciences with more applied, clinically relevant research into our training program.

Here are a few more reasons why you should consider enrolling in our graduate program:

The faculties of the Department of Cellular & Integrative Physiology are fully committed to providing a strong, dynamic academic research environment for students. We are dedicated to providing individual mentoring for students in all aspects of academic research and career development. As evidence of this commitment, we have seen a dramatic 41% increase in research funding to our faculty over the last two years (2008-2009) going from $3.7 to $5.2 million and we look forward to expanding our doctoral program with students who will participate in all of our research endeavors.

With the arrival of our new chair, Dr. Michael Sturek in July 2004, our department has undergone great expansion and we have recruited 5 new faculty members and many faculty have moved into completely renovated space on the 3rd floor of the Medical Science Building. These spacious laboratories and departmental facilities are state of the art, providing well-appointed core equipment rooms, microscopy suites and spacious conference areas, as well as large graduate and faculty offices.

Doctoral (PhD) Students will formally enter our graduate program upon completion of the 1st year of the IBMG gateway program by selecting a faculty mentor from our primary faculty or adjunct faculty to serve as their thesis advisor. Student stipends are highly competitive ($24,500/year for 2009-10), and pay all of our student's tuition, as well as health plan benefits and associated registration fees. Students in the Cellular & Integrative Physiology graduate program have opportunities for supplementing their stipends by competing for and receiving external fellowships from such organizations as National Institutes of Health, American Heart Association, or the Department of Defense, etc.

Master of Science (MS) Students will apply to enter our graduate program using the instructions provided on the web link entitled: "How to Apply to the ... MS Program". This degree pathway requires a total of 18 didactic course credits and 12 research credits for a total of 30 credits. This is an intensive 1-2 year (3 semester) program designed for students who wish to pursue advanced positions in academic research institutions, industrial settings, and professional schools (e.g. medicine, dentistry). Students entering this program will enhance their knowledge of cellular and integrated physiology through coursework and research, which will help prepare the student for jobs in biomedical research, industry, small colleges, and other professions. In addition, this program serves students who wish to improve their academic qualifications for entry into professional schools such a medical or dental schools.

The Indiana University School of Medicine is located on the vibrant Indiana University - Purdue University (IUPUI) campus, in Indianapolis, Indiana. IUPUI offers over 70 graduate degrees to students interested in pursuing a Ph.D., a professional degree, or a master's degree. In addition, the location of this urban campus makes it perfect for those stretching their minds or their muscles. The IUPUI campus is located adjacent to numerous museums, the NCAA Hall of Fame, the White River Park as well as Victory Field - home of the Indianapolis Indians AAA league. These venues provide students with numerous opportunities for extracurricular activities.

Indianapolis is the nation's 12th largest city and is a city that offers big-city amenities in a convenient, easy-to-navigate package that's wrapped in a friendly and inviting atmosphere. Indianapolis has a very reasonable cost of living and is a culturally diverse city with many attractive features including a strong focus on athletic venues, art museums, and restaurants.

The establishment of the Central Indiana Life Science Network, in February 2002, has ensured the continued growth and vitality of the already strong pharmaceutical and biotechnology community in central Indiana. This newly formed network aligns government, industry and academic resources to accelerate business growth: Central Indiana is on the way to becoming one of the nation's top biotechnology research corridors.
