It is my privilege to introduce our outstanding core of faculty and staff and activities in the Department of Cellular & Integrative Physiology. Our success clearly stems from a strong base involving individuals committed to our shared mission of conducting outstanding research and teaching. The discipline of physiology has evolved substantially over the last decade. We maintain ties with classic integrative concepts of whole animal and organ physiology, while using sophisticated experimental tools of the 21st century to approach important physiological questions at cellular and molecular levels. Indeed, “integrative physiology” today must encompass all these levels. We are pleased that our mission is entirely consistent with the major research, teaching, and service missions of Indiana University School of Medicine. Indeed, our departmental theme is integration by skills, projects, student training, and centers.

We have been in a dynamic growth phase of the department and medical school. Extramural funding of research continues to be sustained in these challenging times. Newly renovated, state-of-the-art laboratories contribute to resources that have facilitated the recruitment of 5 new tenure track faculty in the past 4 years and we plan to add more faculty in 2009. Further, long-term research and progressive salary incentives provide initiative for sustained success and growth of faculty research programs. These departmental resources are complemented by other strong departments and Research Centers, including: Biomedical Engineering, the Center for Diabetes Research, Indiana Center for Vascular Biology & Medicine, Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI), Indiana Institute for Biomedical Imaging Sciences, Krannert Institute of Cardiology, Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center, O’Brien Research Center for Advanced Renal Microscopic Analysis, Stark Neuroscience Research Institute, Wells Center for Pediatric Research, and others. Our department, true to its name, is integrated in the research and teaching missions of many of these centers and departments.

Thank you for visiting our website. We hope that you find it informative. Please feel free to contact me or any of our faculty, staff, postdoctoral fellows, or students if you have additional questions.

Best regards,

Michael Sturek, Ph.D.
