Stroke

Our mission - to maximally limit cerebrovascular diseases incidence and reduce stroke related disability in the State of Indiana and beyond through innovations and excellence in education, research, and patient care.

The Stroke Program in the IUSM Department of Neurology brings together neurologists and specialists from other departments dedicated to providing coordinated and best possible care to patients with cerebrovascular diseases. The Stroke program faculty is also committed to educate and train future cerebrovascular specialists and to conduct clinical research to discover improved treatments for stroke. Acute stroke evaluation and treatment begins in the Emergency Departments (ED) with the collaboration of the ED staff and includes thrombolytic drugs and mechanical thrombectomy as indicated. Acute stroke care continues in specialized hospital units prepared to monitor acute stroke patients and take actions to limit complications. Rehabilitation services are an integral part of stroke care and include physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy supervised by physiatrists.  Outpatient clinics are focused on stroke prevention. Currently, the vast majority of acute stroke patients are treated at a large community hospital (Methodist) and a County hospital (Wishard Memorial). A small proportion of patients with complex cerebrovascular disorders are treated at a University hospital and a Veterans Affairs hospital. Riley hospital for children includes pediatric stroke specialists.
