The Data Driven Decision (3D) initiative provides valuable summary-level information for school leaders regarding faculty effort and related costs by mission (education, research, clinical, and other service). The data has been used to inform legislators and hospital partners regarding the underfunded cost of educating our medical and graduate students, and to estimate and project the amount of internal investment required to sustain departmental research.
Currently, however, the 3D process is labor intensive, time consuming, and data is considered incomplete and difficult to interpret. Components of faculty effort captured in the model are complex, and the resulting reports are not widely used by department chairs and directors.
This project will include the design and implementation of a revised reporting process for the 3D initiative. It seeks to improve the quality and accuracy of 3D data, while reducing the amount of effort required by faculty, department chairs and administrators to complete them. The improved process should provide the following benefits:
- Useful departmental tools to help evaluate faculty performance and communicate expectations to faculty
- Analysis of faculty activity that is accurate and beneficial to departments
- Draws focus ahead to the future, rather than nit-picking details about the past
- Adds informative elements to the 3D reports that are not wholly time-based
- Improvements to the ASR, including the removal of time based questions and clinical activity, return it to a forum for reporting outcomes, not hours of effort
- Fewer effort components, using centrally gathered data, simplify report requirements
Effort will be made to integrate the 3D process with other processes, including the Indiana Clinic, annual faculty performance reviews, the on-line Annual Summary Report (ASR), the department annual review (DAR), etc.
Objectives of the project include:
- Reduced workload for departments/units and faculty
- Improved data and simplified model
- Increased value to department chairs/directors for faculty performance reviews and evaluation
