Ways to Give

Gifts to the Indiana University School of Medicine may be made  outright - the funds will be used in their entirety - or in the form of an endowment. An endowed gift becomes the principal of a fund, managed by the Indiana University Foundation, which generates interest earnings in support of a program or initiative at the Indiana University School of Medicine. A portion of the earnings is reinvested so that the fund grows faster than inflation, steadily supplying the money needed to accomplish its intended goals. In terms of time, an endowed gift remains in perpetuity while an outright gift may be used immediately and completely. Gifts of cash, check or credit card are welcome. Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express are accepted and checks should be made payable to IU Foundation – School of Medicine. Give now to support Medical Scholarships, Medical Research or greatest need to the School.

Gifts of appreciated securities or real estate are popular alternatives to cash gifts. Such gifts generate a double tax benefit. You receive an income tax deduction for the full fair market value of the property while avoiding capital gains taxes.

A gift of tangible personal property such as books, equipment, furniture and so on may be deductible up to the full fair market value of the property if it satisfies the "related use" standard and is documented by a qualified appraisal.

A planned gift commitment provides the opportunity to make significant gifts while maintaining financial responsibilities. It affords you the opportunity to formalize estate planning, retain income with tax benefits, increase income for yourself and/or your beneficiaries and realize estate and capital gains tax savings. Please see the list of possible planned gift commitments for further information. An honor gift is an especially significant recognition of an esteemed family member, colleague, friend or mentor. Contributions are made in the name of this significant individual to commemorate the impact they have on the donor’s life. It can be an outright contribution or an endowed gift that will recognize the honoree in perpetuity. Honor gifts can also be made to celebrate a special occasion or event.

A memorial gift is established in tribute to a special person and usually expresses condolence for the loss of a loved one or friend. Typically, memorial gifts support research but can be directed toward any area of interest to the donor.
