About Pathology

Laboratory professionals are among the most unheralded and unknown groups within the medical profession, yet there are more than 280,000 professionals across the country that perform and interpret laboratory tests to help save lives and keep people healthy.

"Over 70% of diagnostic and treatment decisions made by doctors are based on medical laboratory test results. Without the work of laboratory professionals, doctors would not be able to confirm their diagnosis. Lab results give us the ability to identify diseases in their earliest stages so that we have a better chance of treating people effectively. In addition, lab tests are the keys to finding possible cures for diseases," stated John Eble, MD, MBA, Chief Pathologist, and Chairman of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Clarian Health.

Our internationally recognized pathologists provide diagnostic services to support the sophisticated tertiary care provided by specialists and sub-specialists in the hospitals we serve. The types of tests performed by our highly-trained staff encompass the entire spectrum of human disease, from routine diagnostic services to clinical laboratories that specialize in bone marrow transplants. The labs provide six and a half million tests each year, providing doctors with the information needed for diagnosis and treatment of all kinds of conditions.

The laboratories of Clarian Health Partners are among the most comprehensive laboratory services in Indiana.  Full-service laboratories are housed at Methodist and Indiana University Hospitals, and specialty laboratories are maintained at Riley Hospital for Children.  These labs are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and perform more than 6.5 million tests a year.  Lab testing services are provided for in-house services, but also to hospitals and physicians around the state. Clarian Health Partners' Point of Care Program is nationally recognized by the laboratory industry for its comprehensive program, training, and competency testing for more than 5,000 nurses in bedside testing.

The Clarian laboratory staff consists of more than 400 managers, medical technologists, cytotechnologists, histotechnologists, lab assistants, phlebotomists, administrative and support staff. In addition to clinical chemistry, hematology, clinical microbiology, and transfusion medicine, Clarian has labs that specialize in allergy testing, apheresis, endocrinology, flow cytometry, hemostasis, thrombosis, molecular diagnostics, stem cells, virology, and complex anatomic pathology.
