Indiana University School of Medicine is seeking an outstanding and committed medical educator and administrator to serve as assistant dean of the School of Medicine and director of the Indiana University School of Medicine-Evansville, a tenure-track position at the level of Professor or Associate Professor.  Located on the campus of the University of Southern Indiana, the Center is one of eight which provides the first- and second-year medical curriculum as part of the Indiana University Statewide System of Medical Education.

Candidates must possess an M.D. and/or Ph.D., or the equivalent and have a keen interest and expertise in medical student education and administration, as well as be knowledgeable in scientific research and with an aptitude for community involvement.

Position Profile, General Description

The Assistant Dean and Director will be responsible for academic leadership at the IUSM-Evansville instructional site and reports directly to the Executive Associate Dean of Educational Affairs in the School of Medicine. He/she bears responsibility for ensuring that the administrative and academic conduct of the program meets or exceeds the academic standards set forth by the School of Medicine and Indiana University. In so doing, the Director implements the policies of IUSM while encouraging professionalism and a spirit of cooperation to establish a cohesive medical program. He/she will be expected to be a strong proponent for the success of Center faculty and students within the School of Medicine and the community at large.

Position Profile, Specific Responsibilities

Education:

- Maintain and enhance the two-year educational program currently in place at IUSM-Evansville and manage   the increase of annual enrollment from 16 to 24 students.
- Expand the curriculum to include 3rd and 4th year rotations.
- Promote scholarship, excellence in teaching, and innovation within the IUSM competency based medical curriculum.
- Participate in basic science and/or clinical components of the curriculum.
- Provide appropriate student counseling and ensure that mechanisms are in place to support at risk students.
- Facilitate opportunities for students to develop a sense of community and a desire to work in Indiana's southwestern region after completing their formal education.

Research:

- Support and promote excellence in IUSM-E faculty research activity (scientific and/or educational).
- Support submission and administration of external grant proposals by IUSM-E faculty.
- Make optimal use of local and IU system-wide resources, and where appropriate integrate the resources of the host campus and community.
- Promote multidisciplinary collaboration and exercise leadership to develop a research focus.

Faculty and Staff:

- Coordinate the recruitment, promotion, tenure, and professional development of faculty dedicated to the Educational, Research, and Service components of the IUSM-E tripartite mission.
- Recruit local clinicians to the medical education program and provide leadership and support for these participants.
- Communicate regularly with the faculty and staff regarding organizational goals, hurdles and opportunities.
- Promote an organizational environment that encourages personal productivity, creativity, job satisfaction and professional development.

Local, Regional and State:

- Maintain and expand mutually beneficial relations with the host institution (USI).
- Actively engage in attracting and generating individual and community support for IUSM-E.
- Apply for public and private financial support to implement IUSM-E programs and faculty research.
- Communicate effectively on a variety of levels: with students, alumni, professional organizations, community leaders and representatives of local and state government.

School and University:

- Manage the IUSM-E budget and flow of resources to IUSM-E programs. 
- Recommend the IUSM-E budget and provide appropriate financial reports.
- Support accreditation processes and ensure that issues identified relating to accreditation are addressed in a timely manner at IUSM-E.
- Work in concert with department chairpersons on issues relating to their discipline's curriculum.
- Lead IUSM-E in building the future of health care in Evansville and Indiana through increasing the capacity for innovation in education, research and clinical practice within the IUSM statewide system.
