Established in 1972, Indiana University School of Medicine - Evansville is one of eight regional campuses within the state of Indiana which, together with Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis, constitute the Indiana University School of Medicine, the largest school of Indiana University. IUSM - Evansville is located on the third floor of the Health Professions Center on the campus of the University of Southern Indiana in the southwestern Indiana community of Evansville, a city of roughly 125,000 residents (2000 census) situated on the northern bank of the Ohio river.
Of the approximately 285 students admitted each year to the medical school, 16 are assigned annually to Evansville where they take the first two years of their medical training under the instruction of members of the basic science faculty. In their first year, students study Gross Anatomy, Histology, Neurobiology, Biochemistry, Physiology, Microbiology, Immunology, and Introduction to Medicine. During their second year, students take courses in Biostatistics, Pharmacology, Medical Genetics, Pathology and Emergency Medicine, as well as continuing with Introduction to Medicine. The classroom and laboratory teaching is supplemented by instruction from over one hundred local physicians who, as members of the volunteer clinical faculty, generously donate time each year to the education of our students. At the moment, these courses are open only to medical students of Indiana University School of Medicine.
In addition to teaching, the basic science faculty are engaged in a variety of biomedical research projects in up-to-date, well-equipped modern laboratories. The results from these endeavors are published in the scientific and medical literature.
